Knit Your Own Mittens (Intermediate  Beginner)

Have you knitted scarves and want to take on something else more interesting?&nbsp;Learn how to make a fuzzy and warm pair of mittens!&nbsp;Whether you prefer a full cover or half cover mitten, we'll go through the techniques and tips for a successful project.&nbsp;&nbsp;The techniques we cover in this workshop are essential for small diameter projects such as mittens, gloves and socks. The topics covered include:<ul><li>How to knit ribs</li><li>How to pick up stitches</li><li>How to increase and decrease stitches</li><li>How to use double-tipped knitting needles</li><li>Pros and cons of double-tipped knitting needles vs. circular needles</li><li>Understanding gauge and how to adjust stitches.&nbsp;If you're making a pair of mittens for someone else, please bring measurements (or better yet, the outline) of their hands</li><li>Closing mitten tops</li><li>Basic color work (Fair Isle)</li><li>How to read patterns</li></ul>This workshop is for advanced beginners who are already familiar with knit, purl, casting on and off.&nbsp;If you're comfortable making scarves, this workshop is a great next step! If you'd like to bring your own materials, we recommend using a bulky yarn in size 5 or 6 (106 yrds, 170g) and two sets of double-tipped knitting needles in 8mm and 10mm sizes.&nbsp;You need at least 4 of each size of the double-tipped knitting needles.&nbsp;If you choose to have materials included, we will provide the needles and yarn required to complete the project. Note:&nbsp;We will focus the workshop time on the techniques required to complete the project.&nbsp;Attendees will leave with patterns and a new found confidence to finish the project at their own pace.Measurements needed for hand size if making mittens for someone else:<ul><li>wrist circumference</li><li>width of the hand (not including thumb)</li><li>length of the hand (as measured from base of the wrist to tip of middle finger)</li><li>length of the thumb (as measured from base of the thumb to tip of thumb)</li><li>length of the middle finger (this will tell us how far to go for fingerless gloves)</li><li>distance from base of the wrist to start of the thumb</li></ul>The easiest way to get the measurements is to trace the hand of the intended recipient on a piece of paper.&nbsp;We recommend having them open the thumb and close the other 4 fingers together for the trace.&nbsp;&nbsp;Trace the entire outline of the hand and also the beginning of the wrist. Duration:&nbsp;1.5hr
