Fluid Form Workshop

Facilitated by Lee Collilouri, this workshop will focus on developing organic fluid shapes using different depths, colors, shading, and a wide range of detail. A variety of drawing materials will be supplied such as chalk, oil pastels, and colored pencils. Refreshments provided and please feel free to join the workshop any time between 2-4pm - drop-ins welcome!

Touching Collage Opening Reception

Join us for the opening reception for&nbsp;Touching Collage, our new exhibition at the Overlook! Exhibition Statement: Touching Collage&nbsp;is a group exhibition of fifteen artists whose works explore the titular idea materially and conceptually. They’ve not only revealed a diverse array of aesthetic interests by working in media such as sculpture, video, VR, artist books, photographic collage, and mixed media painting, but their works have collectively generated four central themes: poetry, narrative, and the archive; materials found, sourced, and collected; fragments sutured, fastened, and embedded together; scenes physical and digital, real and reworked.

Experimental Music by Moon Unit

Join us at the Overlook Gallery (located on the lower level of the large historic church) for a rich night of contemporary classical music and experimental composition by Moon Unit (Olivia Katz and Steph Tamas)! The program includes pieces for solo saxophone and solo cello by Raven Chacon, Marcos Balter, Alex Mincek, and Helmut Lachenmann.

Opening Reception - Moving and Working Through

In this exhibit, Yildiz Grodowski, Erin Palazzolo Loparo, and Jennifer Jean Okumura utilize abstraction as a type of movement – a formless form that through the language of gesture, composition, and scale, functions as a way of navigating the world and communicating their experiences within it. With a physicality and embodied practice guiding each artist’s approach, abstraction offers a mode of understanding the world with particular attention toward the bodily, the intuitive, and the mindful. Whether it be spiritual growth, a connection to place, or radical change following a transformative life event, the works in the exhibit serve as a reminder of the individual and social components that shape the creation of a piece – even if they aren’t immediately visible or concretely represented in the work: Grodowski’s background in dance and focus on improvisation, Palazzolo Loparo’s familial attachments and profession, and Okumura’s personal artistic values and Buddhist-Catholic heritage. Yet even as they’re influenced by the specific details of their lives, they create scenes that feel spacious, wide, and expansive. They take the particular and the significant, and proceed to magnify it up to scale.

A Gathering for "Obsolescence: Living with Fewer Things"

In the spirit of Obsolescence, our current exhibit at the Overlook, join us for an afternoon reliving past memories and finding resonances in our wonderful artworks on view! Curator's Statement: This exhibit, featuring representational and non-representational artwork from 13 UVA artists, presents ideas and images related to the changes in technology, goods, services and even ideas. As these changes occur, obsolescence occurs and this phenomena results in waste and inefficiency. The primary reasons for items becoming outdated are related to changes to technical, functional and stylistic features. Changes may also be planned. Though change and impermanence for everything is inevitable, obsolescence hastens the amount of unwanted waste and things. Artists were asked to think of how obsolescence has affected them personally or as part of society. The art delves into this experience or conveys an aspect of that experience and is meaningful to the artist and perhaps the audience. Artists:&nbsp;SD Armour, Mary Barton-Lech, Paula Pitman Brown, Stephen Brown, Lee Collilouri, Giti Ganjei, Mary Gillis, John Higgins, Bob Greene, Sam Price, Adriana G. Prat, Allida Warn, and Andrew Zou.

Voyagers of the Self Reception

The opening reception for Voyagers of the Self, an exhibit featuring the work of Brighton High School AP Art Students! The 11th and 12th grade AP Art class was asked to push the boundaries of self-portraiture, investigating the interior and exterior of who they are, how they perceive themselves, and how others may perceive them. Through personal inquiry and extensive planning, these student artists have created self-portraits using a variety of 2D media.

In this workshop, participants will explore the relationship between humanity and nature inspired by the process drawings of Allida Warn. Participants will ground themselves by doing a short walking meditation and using phone-photography and drawing in the park outside the Overlook Gallery.&nbsp;

Mandala Workshop in the Gallery

Learn from an Art Therapist the freedom and release of creating a therapeutic mandala (sacred circle). Using an array of watercolor pencils, we will create 3-ring mandalas mindfully – using lines, shapes, colors, symbols and words to reflect on what we feel, know and hope in our lives. All materials provided. Send The Other Half: Mail Art Workshop

Join the Half-Life artists in a workshop to create your own experimental mail art exchange! We’ll play with what an everyday letter can be, and you’ll get to send out your creation for a recipient to send back (at least part of it) in a new form. We’ll have supplies, stamps, and prompts as tools to get the ideas flowing and experimenting going.

Half-Life Opening Reception

Please join us for the opening reception of Half-Life, a captivating exhibit featuring artists Madeline Lee, Matthew Okazaki and Maria Fong. The works on view include painting, mixed media collage, photographs, and installation. Exhibit Statement: Often used to describe radioactive or chemical decay, the term “half-life” takes on alternate meanings through other interpretations presented by three artists: Matthew Okazaki, Madeline Lee, and Maria Fong. “Half-life” interpretations include: decay, both material and non-material; what happens in half a life; a measurement of time linked to fundamental change; halving of identity; being counterpart to something that once existed. Applied to scenes of everyday life, objects of resilience, rituals, and processes of making, the artists explore making meaning out of the passage of time, forging new understandings of ourselves and what makes us whole - or sometimes, just half.

Opening: Fragmented and Transparencies in Time

An exciting new exhibit featuring two artists: “Fragmented” is a photography series by Claudia Starkey that was created using an intricate computer algorithm. It is a surrealist exploration of how the brain processes memories intentionally replicated using current technology. The innovative method of composing photos uses personal photos that the artist has taken mixed in with others inherited as family heirlooms. It blends in images of her ancestors and childhood, along with more contemporary scenes of people, places, and objects. The photos range anywhere from the early 70s to the current times, but a few go all the way back to the 1920s. Each photograph is a journey into a surrealist realm. “Transparencies in Time” is a visual art installation by Jose Trejo-Maya that is both interactive, multidisciplinary, and kin-esthetic audio-visual sculpture. It’s a multi-phase comprehensive exposé on Mesoamerican lore and more specifically on a pre-Columbian notion of time. The poetry is alive, and the oral tradition still lives, though it’s thought that this ancient culture is dead.

Opening and Reception: "Awake: Mindfulness and Presence in Art" 

This is the opening reception for "Awake" another impactful exhibit presented by UVA. The exhibit is curated by Jack Energy. Exhibit Assistants - Jessica Hernandez, Shuxian Zhang. There will be refreshments and live entertainment. The exhibit includes 2 and 3 dimensional and video art from 20 + artists: Curator's Statement: Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we're doing and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. This exhibition will strive to enlighten and educate the public on mindfulness, which is a cornerstone of mental and physical health for many. It is a quality that every human being can possess and utilize through practice. The narratives behind each work and every artist will tell a story of their journey and inspire the viewers. Artists are encouraged to present a narrative of any mindful and/or spiritual paths that may be represented in their works of art. As a result, visitors may be inspired to embark on their own spiritual/awakened and more healthful paths. Visitors will be inspired to evaluate their breathing styles through more consciously and deeply feeling more relaxed and truly enlightened via the artworks and information presented on mindfulness &amp; being fully present.

Latinx Identities: Struggles, Perspectives, and Critiques

Unbound Visual Arts is pleased to present a forthcoming exhibit in honor of Latinx Heritage Month. In this show curated by Jessica Hernandez, twelve artists have offered rich meditations on what it means to be Latinx in our current moment. Through sculpture, photography, time-based works, and mixed media, the featured artists examine subjects ranging from movement and migration, gender and womanhood, the violence of the nation-state, and the importance of healing the mind and the body. Latinx Identities: Struggles, Perspectives, and Critiques will be on display from September 22nd, 2023 to November 17th, 2023 at UVA’s Arthaus Gallery. The free public opening reception for the exhibit will be held on Thursday September 28th 2023 from 6:30 - 8:00 pm ET. Please join us for live entertainment and refreshments!
