Marblehead's premier beach, Devereux Beach's 5.48 acres of waterfront offers a refreshing swim in the Atlantic Ocean, pavilions, benches, picnic tables, restroom facilities, a restaurant and parking. It was once the site of the home of John Devereux (1615-1695), for whom the beach is named. While visiting the home in 1846, famed poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote his well-known poem "The Fire of Driftwood" about spending an evening in this old farmhouse. The home is no longer standing. Devereux Beach is located off Ocean Avenue at the beginning of the Causeway to Marblehead Neck. Get there via the MBTA Commuter Rail:<ul><li>Closest Commuter Rail station: Swampscott</li><li>Take the Newbury/Rockport Line.</li></ul>2025 Parking Rates Apply In Season: Memorial Day — Labor Day 7:00 am - 5:00 pm, weather dependent Resident Parking:  Residents with a current <a href="https://www.marbleheadma.gov/trash-recycling/pages/facilities-sticker">Resident Facility Sticker</a> will be able to park in the Resident Lot. The parking lot gates lock at 10:00 pm. Residents Without a Resident Facility Sticker:  Parking will be available in the main Devereux Lot and the Riverhead Lot. Proof of residency required: valid license, car registration, or current utility bill required. Fees are paid via credit card and are non-refundable.<ul><li>Monday — Thursday: $15.00</li><li>Friday — Sunday &amp; Holidays: $20.00</li></ul>Non-Residents:  Parking will be available in the main Devereux Lot and the Riverhead Lot. Fees are paid via credit card and are non-refundable.<ul><li>Monday — Thursday: $25.00</li><li>Friday — Sunday &amp; Holidays: $30.00</li></ul>Kayak Rentals Kayak rentals are drop-in, please see the gate attendant if you are interested. We accept cash or credit, with an additional 4% processing fee for credit cards.<ul><li>Single kayak: $20 for one hour / $5 for each additional 30 minutes</li><li>Double kayak: $25 for one hour / $10 for each additional 30 minutes</li></ul>Public Restrooms: Open (in-season and weather dependent), typically from 7:00 am - 7:00 pm.   Accessibility: Handicapped parking is available. An access mat is installed at the beach to accommodate walkers, wheelchairs, and strollers. Additionally, a beach wheelchair is available for use from the parking attendant's station. Lifeguards: There are NO Lifeguards at Devereux Beach. Swim at your own risk. Permits for camp, school, organization or paid program groups to visit and access Devereux Beach can be <a href="https://register.capturepoint.com/reg/facility_details.cfm?facility_id=26256">requested here via the Special Request Permit Form</a>. No buses will be allowed on the premises without a permit.  Beach Closures and Water Quality: The beach and parking area may be closed at any time for public safety reasons. For information regarding closures or swim water quality, please check the <a href="https://www.marbleheadma.gov/public-health">Board of Health website</a> or call (781) 631-0212 for details. Trash: Please place all trash in the barrels provided. Barrels are emptied throughout the day when staff is on duty. Please help keep your beach clean by properly disposing of trash! Come join us for the re-enactment, breakfast, historic talks, and even a historic trolley ride! ALL EVENTS ARE FREE! Patriots’ Day is the celebration of the first battle of the American Revolution. On April 18, 1775, three riders, Paul Revere from Boston, William Dawes from Roxbury, and Samuel Prescott from Concord, rode to warn American colonists that the British were marching from Boston and attempting to capture ammunition and cannons that were stored in Concord and Lexington to fight against the British Crown. Patriots’ Day has been a holiday in Massachusetts since 1894 but changed to the third Monday in April in the 1940s to coincide with the Boston Marathon. The Roxbury Collaborative has hosted the Roxbury portion of the ride with the re-enactment of the William Dawes ride since 1992. The Collaborative is a coalition of veterans, historic and community groups along with the First Church of Roxbury, the Dillaway-Thomas House and individuals who love history.
