The Living Declaration: When in the Course of Human Events

Why does it include language about human rights? In conversation with MHS Chief Historian Kanisorn Wongsrichanalai, historian and former presidential speechwriter Ted Widmer (The Living Declaration) explores the complex lineage of the words and ideas in the Declaration and the dramatic sequence of events, many of them originating in Massachusetts, that led to the creation of the most consequential state paper in history. Join us for a lively discussion and the opportunity to view key MHS holdings like Thomas Jefferson's original manuscript copy of the Declaration. This publishing and public impact initiative is made possible with generous support from The National Endowment for the Humanities, and from Les Levi and David Bruce Smith—Grateful American Foundation. Library of America, a nonprofit organization, champions our nation’s cultural heritage by publishing America’s greatest writing in authoritative new editions and providing resources for readers to explore this rich, living legacy.
