Make the MFA your Thursday night destination! On the third Thursday of every month, enjoy the Museum after dark with $5 admission from 5 to 10 pm. Explore the galleries, join hands-on art-making, shop unique finds, and grab drinks and a bite to eat at New American Café or Taste. Every month brings something new! From community celebrations to live performances, there are plenty of reasons to gather with friends, meet new ones, or escape with art at the MFA. On Thursday, September 18: In honor of Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month, join us for an evening celebrating Latinx heritage and culture, presented in partnership with We Are ALX and Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción. Catch live music, dance performances, and talks in the galleries; see works of art by Latinx artists; and connect with friends and family! Events and Activities Drop-In Art Making: Puerto Rican Beaded Bracelets 5–8 pm Gallery 168 Join Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción (IBA) to customize a bracelet using Puerto Rican flag beads, coquí charms, and beaded lettering. All ages welcome. Drop-In Art Making: Ex-Votos, Paintings that Tell a Story 5–9 pm (last entry 8:45 pm) Druker Family Pavillion, Linde Family Wing Ex-votos paintings, often created on tin or found materials, express thanks for answered prayers or show, using pictures and words, something amazing or unexplainable that happened to someone. Get inspired by the works of art on view in gallery 336 in the Art of the Americas Wing, then use paint, markers, and mixed media to share a story of your own! Community Partners Fair 5–9 pm Shapiro Family Courtyard Meet representatives from the Museum and our community partners and learn about the resources and programs offered. Partners include We Are ALX, Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción, the Mayor's Office for Immigrant Advancement (MOIA), and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts. THE ALX100 Pyramid 5–10 pm Lower Rotunda We Are ALX's project ALX100 recognizes exceptional Latino American leaders and change makers across the Commonwealth. Celebrate the honorees with the ALX100 pyramid, a colorful display representing the three pillars of ALX's work: policy, business, and leadership. DJ Montro 5–5:30 and 8:15–9:30 pm Shapiro Family Courtyard Take the celebration to the next level with DJ Montro, who hails from the Dominican Republic and always keeps the dance floor full with his unique blend of Latinx music across genres. Three in 30 5:30 (English-language tour) and 7 pm (bilingual English- and Spanish-language tour) Meet in Sharf Visitor Center Celebrate Latinx heritage on this 30-minute tour featuring works by an Indigenous Mesoamerican potter, a Puerto Rican painter, and a Latin American female Surrealist. Learn about the cultural significance of these pieces and their impact on Latinx identity. ASL interpreter available at 5:30 pm A Dance Journey through Latin America 5:45–6:30 pm Shapiro Family Courtyard The Verónica Robles Cultural Center (VROCC) is thrilled to present “A Dance Journey through Latin America,” featuring talented dancers and musicians. This vibrant performance showcases the rich sounds, movements, and colors of several Latin American countries, including Mexico, Colombia, El Salvador, Chile, and Peru. VROCC promotes Latin American arts and cultures as an engine for stronger communities and economic growth, offering joyful and colorful dance, music, art and culinary experiences to all. ‘I Live(d) Where You Vacation’: A Participatory Performance by Poetry Is Busy Studio 6–6:30 and 7–7:30 pm Riley Seminar Room Time-travel from la futura back to your current self through a journey in watercolor! Yara Liceaga-Rojas and Michelle R.O from Poetry Is Busy Studio invite the audience to participate in I Live(d) Where You Vacation, a collective reflection on gratitude, legacy, craft, labor, art making, care practices, and value through a visual storytelling experience in relation to what we define as home. Participation is required. Spaces are limited. Spotlight Talk: María Magdalena Campos-Pons and Ana Mendieta 6:15 (in English) and 7:15 pm (in Spanish) Gallery 158 Share the legacy of two great women artists—María Magdalena Campos-Pons and Ana Mendieta—whose work focuses on spirituality, migration, and memory. With Carmen Hermo, Lorraine and Alan Bressler Curator of Contemporary Art. ASL interpreter available at 6:15 pm Spotlight Talk: ‘In Despair She Returned to Ismael’ 6:45 and 7:45 pm Gallery 175 Hear from artist Ismael Muhammad Nieves as he talks about his work <a href="https://collections.mfa.org/objects/713955">In Despair She Returned to Ismael</a> (2017) with Nadirah Mansour, assistant curator of Islamic Art. ASL interpreter available at 6:45 pm Rafa Moreno Band 6:45-7:30 pm Shapiro Family Courtyard Rafa Moreno, the Panamanian performer, composer, arranger, and producer puts on an energetic show combining very well-known salsa songs and originals. His orchestra, full of young and upcoming talents from different parts of Latin America, gives the music a fresh touch while preserving the traditional flavor. SambaViva 7:45–8 pm Shapiro Family Courtyard Experience the color, movement, and energy of SambaViva’s bold choreographies and contagious rhythms. SambaViva is a Brazilian dance ensemble dedicated to authentically promoting Brazilian culture through dance and music.
