Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah [formerly Christian Scott] is a two-time Edison Award-winning, six-time Grammy Award-nominated, Doris Duke Award in the Arts awardee. He is a sonic architect, trumpeter, multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, and designer of innovative technologies and musical instruments (including The Stretch Music app, Adjuah Trumpet, Siren, Sirenette, Chief Adjuah’s Bow, and Chief Adjuah’s N’Goni). He is also the founder and CEO of the Stretch Music App and Recording Company. Adjuah is Chieftain and Oba of the Xodokan Nation as well as the current Grand Griot of New Orleans. He is the grandson of Louisiana luminary and legend, the late Big Chief Donald Harrison Sr., Guardians Institute founder and Grand Griot, Herreast Harrison. And is the nephew of Jazz innovator and NEA Jazz Master saxophonist-composer, Big Chief Donald Harrison Jr. Adjuah (and his twin brother Kiel) joined his grandfather’s Guardians of the Flame banner in 1989 at the age of 5. Since 2001, Adjuah has released thirteen critically acclaimed studio recordings, four live albums, and one greatest hits collection. He is widely recognized as the progenitor of the “Stretch Music,” style. A 21st-century approach that asserts genre blindness and an ethnomusicological approach to limitless fusion that heralded NPR to hail him as “Ushering in a new era of Jazz” and JazzTimes Magazine to mark him as “Jazz’s young style God.” and “the architect of a commercially viable fusion”. He has collaborated with a number of notable artists, including Prince, Thom Yorke, McCoy Tyner, Marcus Miller, Flea, Eddie Palmieri, Robert Glasper, rappers Mos Def (Yasin Bey), Talib Kweli, as well as heralded poet and musician Saul Williams. Adjuah scores music for his identical twin brother’s, writer/director and visual artist Kiel Adrian Scott, filmic works. Scott is a Directors Guild of America Award recipient whose works have been honored with The Peabody Award and an NAACP Image Award.

Before his live performance at WBUR CitySpace, Chief Adjuah will engage in a moderated talk about his musical journey, the role of heritage and upbringing in his work, and how he navigates the music industry beyond conventional labels. This discussion offers a unique opportunity to learn more about his background and approach to music. This event will be moderated by music educator, conductor, ethnomusicologist, writer, and human rights activist Dr. André de Quadros. After deep discussion there will be time for a Q&amp;A at the end. André de Quadros, music educator, conductor, ethnomusicologist, writer, and human rights activist has conducted and undertaken research in over forty countries. His professional work has taken him to the most diverse settings, spanning professional ensembles, and projects with prisons, peacebuilding and reconciliation, psychosocial rehabilitation, refugees and asylum-seekers, poverty locations, and victims of torture and trauma. For nearly a decade, André de Quadros has worked in Massachusetts prisons, jails, and detention centers with a focus on empowering people in incarcerated settings to tell their stories through improvised music, song-creation, poetry, movement, and theater. The approach co-created by him is called Empowering Song.

The BU Arts Initiative is excited to bring renowned photographer Jacob Webster to Boston University. This conversation will explore Webster's journey to becoming a photographer and how his experiences have shaped his story. This discussion will be moderated by Dr. Alisa Prince, scholar, artist, and curator of visual arts and artifacts of the Black diaspora. Jacob Webster&nbsp;is a freelance creative director and photographer with a decade of experience specializing in beauty and fashion photography. As a self-taught artist, Jacob embodies creativity, authenticity, and resilience. Working at the intersection of beauty, fashion, and culture, Jacob helps millennial creatives find their voice through image and content creation. <a href="https://www.jpwclients.com/about">https://www.jpwclients.com/about</a> Dr. Alisa Victoria Prince&nbsp;is a scholar, artist, and curator of visual arts and artifacts of the Black diaspora. Her work focuses on the history of photography, the roles of race and gender in identity construction, Black Feminist traditions, archival theory, and artistic forms of resistance. Her dissertation takes up vernacular photographs of Black people, particularly those with origins in the family album, and explores the forms of value to which they are subject in different spaces. She has taught courses on Black identity, feminism, photography, and cultural capital and serves on the Editorial Board of&nbsp;InVisible Culture, a journal for visual culture. From 2021-2022 she jointly held the Henry Luce/American Council of Learned Societies Fellowship in American Art and the Chester Dale Fellowship in the Department of Photographs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. <a href="https://www.bu.edu/cas/profile/alisa-prince/">https://www.bu.edu/cas/profile/alisa-prince/</a>

Small Island Big Song Concert

Presented by the BU Arts Initiative, Small Island Big Song is a music, film and performing arts project uniting the islands of the Pacific and Indian Ocean through artistic collaboration, a contemporary and relevant musical statement from a region that shares an ancient seafaring heritage and the impact of our changing sea. The performance ‘Our Island’ brings together some of the most prominent artists of Taiwan, Madagascar, Mauritius, Papua New Guinea, and Tahiti, who have made a choice to maintain the cultural voice of their people, to sing in the language, and to play the instruments of their land. These unique lineages mixed with their diverse contemporary styles - roots-reggae, beats, folk &amp; spoken-word, establish a contemporary musical dialogue between cultures, drawing on their ancestral lineage to confront contemporary issues with a hope driven vision of the future.  Motivated by their concerns for the ocean, Taiwanese theater producer BaoBao Chen and Australian music producer/filmmaker Tim Cole spent the past 8 years visiting artists on sixteen island nations of the Pacific &amp; Indian Oceans, recording with their guidance in nature, sharing songs from island to island. Scentience: A Collection of Olfactory Expression

The BU Arts Initiative, in partnership with Meg Younger (Biology), BU Department of Biology, and the BU Center for Systems Neuroscience presents an exhibit by artist M Doughtery entitled Scentience: A Collection of Olfactory Expressions. The exhibit will open at 3:30 followed by an artist talk at 4:30. M Doughtery is a nonbinary, multidisciplinary artist and researcher. With a rich background in many fields, they focus on psychophysical research and artwork which uses design to express the output of research. Their artistic practice originated in sculpture so consistently involves installation and personal interaction through the senses. This manifests in explorations of biomaterials, chemo-sensory information, and the design of wearable technologies that enhance humans’ relationship to scent.

BLACKBIRD, FLY is a live performance that weaves together an enduring tapestry of movement, narrative, music, and Haitian folklore to engage audiences in dialog about critical questions of our time. Enjoy the outstanding music of Colombian Trios Palos y Cuerdas Hermanos Saboya featuring vocals by David Guzman (BU Faculty). Trios Palos y Cuerdas Hermanos Saboya are one of the most versatile and prominent ensembles of the Colombian Andean music scene. Brothers Diego, Daniel, and Lucas are experienced composers and performers that have been recognized as one of the top instrumental trios in Colombia. According to Lauro Lisboa Garcia, festival choro jazz Jericoacoara, “combining two guitars and a bandola, the musicians performed the most exciting concert of the festival, bringing the beautiful music of the Andean region of Colombia … The performance of the trio was overwhelming and left us with the impression of having discovered something great.” Sit back, relax, and enjoy an evening of beautiful Colombian Andean music.

The BU Global Music Festival

The BU Global Music Festival is a free, family-friendly event at Boston University. This year’s festival line-up includes some high-energy powerhouses that will throw down a party: Mexican marimba-punk band Son Rompe Pera (Boston debut) to Malawian street musician duo Madalitso (Boston debut) playing home-made instruments; and the three-time winner of the second largest carnival in Latin America Bazurto All Stars (Boston debut), a serious powerhouse party band hailing from Colombia. Then, on the other end of the spectrum, we have a few who are exploring their folkloric and traditional sounds: Indonesian percussion/dance troupe Saung Budaya; Yamma Ensemble (Boston debut) that weaves together musical styles from Jewish diasporas across the Mediterranean and the Middle East; and Kingfisher Singers and Dancers, who will be representing the Indigenous Wampanoag voices from our very own region. Somewhere in the middle are the quirky trad-electro-pop duo Puluup (Boston debut) from Estonia and the Ethiopian trad-experimental quintet Qwanqwa (Boston debut), both of whom manage to combine vernacular styles with experimental modern sounds to generate their own unique sounds.
