Not sure about where to rent a car but in case you don’t end up renting one, the commuter rail is $10 for unlimited rides during the weekend and some holidays. Salem, Rockport, Newburyport would be my pick for a fun day trip by train or car

Cider Hill Farm in Amesbury always makes for a nice daytrip. Along the way you can stop in Ipswich for seafood or even Salem. For a car, have you tried the Toro app?

Can be over an hour in traffic! Commuter rail is also available. I have used Getaround and Zipcar
